Protein also helps to reduce DOMS (soreness) and decrease recovery time
Basically, when you work out, regardless of if it is cardio or weight training, you are breaking down muscle. You should be taking a protein shake to help rebuild that muscle and recover. It shouldn't affect your ability to lose weight, other than the fact that you're taking in a hundred and fifty or so more calories that you'll need to compensate for in your diet somewhere else.
