I actually thought we were about to roll Utah in that game.
Here's how the game was playing out:
1st Quarter
- BYU had GIFTED Utah a TD on the Cougars' opening offensive possession.
- BYU then drove inside Utah territory and fumbled (Quezada on the U44).
- BYU then drove to the Utah 3-yard line and fumbled.
- BYU then drove to the Utah 28-yard line and kicked a FG.

After the 1st quarter, BYU had 136 yards passing (130 total yards on 23 plays, 5.7 yards per play) and 8 1st Downs. Utah had 52 total yards (including just 5 yards rushing//2.7 ypp) and two 1st downs.

2nd Quarter:
- The middle of the quarter Heaps hit Apo for a 32-yard TD pass to give BYU a 10-7 lead. IMO, this was one of the prettiest passes Heaps ever threw at BYU.
- On the next drive, KVN intercepted Wynn.

This is where I also thought that BYU was about to just roll Utah. They had overcome the three disastrous fumbles to retake the lead. The Utes had done next to nothing on offense to this point. They had just six first downs. John White IV had nine rushes for nine yards.

I thought I just seen it click for Heaps. He was going to drive BYU down the field and we were going into the locker room up 17-7.

Instead, BYU goes three-and-out after a false start, a decent run by JJ and then two incompletions. Utah and Chow then discovered that BYU couldn't cover a crossing route and drove 63 yards in 6 plays to lead 14-10 at the half.

BYU then failed to come out of the half. They gave up a long TD pass (59-yards), went three-and-out on their first offensive possesion, gave up a FG, fumbled the kickoff, gave up a another quick TD. The teams then traded punts and then Heaps fumbled a second time deep in BYU territory.

And then BYU quit. They quit on offense. They quit on defense.

At halftime, Utah had 27 yards rushing on 13 carries. In the third quarter, Utah had 15 rushes for 59 yards and 10 carries for 156 yards in the 4th. Utah scored 16 points in the 3rd and 24 in the 4th.

Meanwhile, BYU had all of 2 yards in the third quarter. And ran for -11 yards in the 2nd half.

I went from thinking BYU was about to blow out Utah for the first time since 1996 to watching until the very last second of the worst home loss in BYU history.
