He is paid by the local community (i.e the taxpayers of the state of Utah)
but that's beside the point. I'm not saying it's wrong for an A.D to look out for the best interests of his athletic program, far from it. But the BYU-Utah football rivalry game has always been a huge deal for the state and if Utah goes the direction of ignoring their in-state rivals, it's not going to serve them very well in the long run.
