I think Bronco had more difficult teams to play but he took over a program
with a winning legacy, a history that included: QB U, All Americans, a Heisman, O'Brien and Maxwell winners, an Outland trophy, a program with national attention, above average facilities and some athletes (thanks Crowton).
Lavell got a bunch of high school kids playing in a cow pasture and nobody outside of Utah County had ever heard of BYU. Tie goes to LaVell.
