I think your memory is bad
Being an old guy, I can say that there probably wasn't a year where there was less than 5 Ricks guys on the 105 man roster in any year they coexisted (I realize we had a few of the waning years of 85, but most of the time it was 105)
There may have been only 1 or 2 starters most of the time, but the real value was the Depth on the OL and DL. Those were traditionally positions where a lot of our depth came via Ricks, and while there weren't a lot of starters, there were a lot of 2 deep players, and a testing ground to find quality depth when we needed it fast.

The DL and OL have had much bigger swings in talent and depth since Ricks disappeared and I have attributed those major swings in talent and depth to the Ricks program going away, that really wasn't an issue through the 80's and really hurt when we started seeing a much higher mission rate and not having a go to plug the hole resource like we had with Ricks.
