I had some long conversations with a tenured professor at a big name research
institution last week. He is required to teach 2.5 classes per year (not sure how the half class works). The rest of his time he is expected to be supervising graduate student research, publishing papers, attending conferences, applying for grants, etc. And I was surprised to hear that tenured professors had a tenure review every 5 years at this place. He made several comments about things that he is expected to do by the school but that the school doesn't really count towards his next tenure review.

My sense was that he was a very busy guy, but he also said that the tenure review is good to kick-start professors that are in a rut and not doing much.
