It's more of a personality issue than anything else...
There are some people (bless their hearts) that either are:

1) just super optimistic people
2) believe it is required to project optimism no matter the situation or what they may actually feel
3) struggle with any kind of criticism so by default must be optimistic otherwise to quote a great Colonel they "can't handle the truth."

Personally, life is just so much more interesting if/when BYU is competitive. I love college football and thus watch way too many games which is partially why I get frustrated watching BYU at times. Some of the issues that BYU has seem pretty obvious and it's not that I think Bronco isn't smart enough to make the changes, I do think he is a bit too stubborn and needs to think outside the box a little more. But watching the same mistakes year after year is akin to chinese water torture. I know BYU has lots of limitations and that BYU does a lot of things really well. I probably don't talk about those things nearly enough however it's being so close yet not getting there that is the frustrating part.
