Well, there have always been major Independents.

Miami and Penn State (along with Notre Dame, who is still Independent) were Independents through 1990.

There have always been major Independents. BYU is the first major Independent aside from Notre Dame since Miami and Penn State joined the Big East, and Big 10, respectively.
