My review of SimpliSafe security system after using it for almost 5 months
Overall I am glad we got it. The initial cost of purchasing all of the sensors seems high but depending on your home monitoring needs, it can easily be made up for in monitoring savings. We bought a house in March and it didn't have a security system. With three small children, I wanted something that alarmed only at home normally (for free), but that I could have monitored when I have to go away on business travel or when we go on vacations. I paid around $500 for all of the entry sensors, motion sensors, glass break sensors, water leak sensors, etc to setup my entire house. There is no contract for monitoring and you can cancel it and restart it any time you want.

Things I like:
-Aside from hold times, their customer service is pretty good and they aren't pushy at all. They totally understand that people want to disable their monitoring for periods of time.
-When my base station had an issue a couple of weeks ago right before a trip, they overnighted me a replacement at no cost so that it would get there in time.
-It does what it is supposed to. All the pieces seem to work right most of the time.
-The sensor configuration is fairly flexible and allows you to set things to alarm away/home or just away. They also have a setting to alarm immediately on certain sensors rather than giving a grace period to prevent the alarm from going off. If you pay for the $20 or $25 plan you can set a sensor to notify you silently when it is triggered rather than triggering the alarm.

Things I don't like:
-You can activate and upgrade your monitoring service online very easily, but to downgrade or to cancel you have to call in.
-Their hold music is terrible. It plays the same 2 minute tune on repeat and their hold times are not fantastic.
-You get credited for the monitoring you pay for and it just stays in a pool for when you want to reactivate.
-You have to pay for their most expensive monitoring service ($25) to be able to configure your system from the web. If you have the $15 or $20 plan you have to use a stupid little USB dongle plugged into your computer to set up the base station and then plug it into the base station to sync the settings.
-If you pay $25 a month you get remote access using their smartphone app, but the app is pretty worthless. Basically it just lets you arm and disarm. In order to see the status of your sensors or change any settings you still have to go to the website.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a whole house alarm system solution but want to avoid the big names that push you into contracts like vivint, adt, xfinity home, etc.
