As with any fanbase, you get both good and bad fans up there.

For the most part, they are pretty BYU and LDS friendly (they have the largest Institute program in the world). In fact, they were more helpful about my mission deferment than BYU was! They mailed several letters/post cards to my home during my service, and even sent me a welcome home letter reminding me to sign up for classes about a month after I returned.

I know quite a few of them cheer for BYU, too. I was up there on a campus tour the day that BYU played Florida in the NCAA tournament. The commons areas were packed with students watching the game on the public TVs and cheering for BYU.

Looks like you ran into one of the immature, bad apples. Sorry about that!
