Well that is how Neil describes how he came up with the song...

Watching TV he saw the Iranians on TV burning the flag and protesting US involvement in Middle East... Bush 1st just became President. Neil thought we should spend more time on social issues affecting the US as outlined by the lyrics... The title"Rockin in the Free World" was a remark a fellow band member made while watching with him, at least that is what I remember...
