My thoughts on eating and drinking late at night.
I'm not saying my one piece of anecdotal evidence stands for everyone, I only have my experience. I would love for others particularly doctors on the board to weigh in (pun totally intended)

To start I've lost 118.3 pounds in the last 9 months. Ultimately my weight loss surgery in January has impacted how many calories I consume (I fully embrace and admit that). That being said as I've lost weight I've become more in tune with how my body wants specific macro nutrients. I can feel when i need carbs and fat for energy and when i need protein (its sounds crazy but its a kind of weird craving when it happens). When i wasn't focused on that kind of stuff i would yo yo all over the place with the foods i ate and when i ate them.

I myself have a calorie budget and a rule to not eat or drink after 8. Even on days where i stay below or at my calorie budget (around 1500, and before y'all freak out my weight loss surgeons and doctors approve that level) i tend to lose weight better if i don't eat or drink after 8 PM. I weigh myself daily and its a trend I've seen of more consistent weight loss when i cut myself off (maybe there's a variable i'm not accounting for i don't know).

My docs agreed that putting myself in that fasting state a couple hours before sleep is beneficial (or at the very least doesn't do harm) to my metabolism and weight loss. I also lift and do HIIT training in the afternoon after work 5 to 6 days a week. The HIIT part of my exercise regimen is designed to boost my metabolism (which leads back to the whole calories in and out which i don't dispute).

There are may parts to the equation of weight loss. Calories in and out are the ultimate factor, which is what i think the linked post was getting after. However the type of calories you get and when you ingest them are also important to your body metabolizing them (e.g. getting more carbs in the morning to give you energy thru the day, protein after a workout for recovery).

I would say you cant go wrong stopping the consumption of calories a couple hours before sleep but what do i know, I was only a doctor on cougarboard for a day.
