You might do well to remember that not only was the good Dr the OC for Harline, but he was also the OC of BYU's all time receiving leader at TE. He knows how to use TE's, it's just been tough finding a good one since Pitta left.
One thing to consider, though, is the current offense isn't as dependent on TE's. Not that it couldn't benefit from having a strong weapon at TE, it's just that the whole point is to spread the field and leave gaps in the middle for the zone read run game to pick and choose when to attack. Those double tight, double back sets of the Hall era really don't exist in this offense.
