Since BYU & BSU both appeared in the 2009 pre-season poll there has not been more than 1 team not currently in a P5 conference in the pre-season polls.

BYU last was in a pre-season poll in 2009 (AP 20, Coach 24).

Boise is the only other one to appear in a preseason poll in that time.

I believe the AP & Coaches poll are certainly weighing in heavily (in cahoots) with the BCS/P5 mantra and leaving teams out from non-P5 areas in pre-season hype is part of the effort. To determine if/where BYU might be in pre-season ranks you really have to compare against the top 3-5 teams outside the P5 and then decide should BYU be above all of them?
