with. LaVell, especially in his later years, was reported to not have a lot of personal involvement in the details of the program, but he always would try to get the best he could and let them do their thing. He became more and more of a figure-head as time went on.
The interesting thing is he could actually be very very good at the inspirational figurehead. But, he's always forced to get back in the weeds because his coordinators are not up to the task. Problems arise when his assistant coaches are mediocre and/or inexperienced at best. Doman, Dupaix, Hill, Howell to name a few. All amateurs that have no business coaching a D1 program the size of BYU in those high level coordinator positions. Anae may be his best coordinator that he's ever had, yet we're all aware of the controversy surrounding his abilities.
I think Bronco could be a wildly successful coach if had the ability to find and hire great talent at high positions.
