I think this is true. But most of our regular season 'big wins' going back to...
LaVell are similar.

BYU's best win of all-time is Miami. No question about it. They won the national championship the year prior and the year after (I think). And their only other loss that year was to a #4 ranked Notre Dame team. They were very, very good, and Ty beat them. The other incredible win LaVell had (that doesn't get talked about enough) is the UCLA win in the Rose Bowl in 1983. That was a very, very good UCLA team.

But other wins that we think of as 'good wins' weren't really that good. Texas A&M (96) ended up going 6-7 and lost to some really bad teams that year. Pitt in '84 only won 4 games or something that whole season. Point being: we actually (sadly) have very few super good regular season wins over good P5 schools in regular season games. Go back and look at the historical records, you'll see the same thing.
