I get what you're saying, but we're talking Ty Detmer
Detmer did not last in the NFL for 14 seasons because of his arm, size or speed. He lasted because of his brain and his temperament. I have never seen a QB so adept with audibles as Ty. He was an extreme expert at reading defenses, which is why he was retained as a quasi-coach for so long.

One other point. Fourteen seasons in the NFL as a quasi coach is roughly 300 games. It's like 24 college seasons. The guy has seen so many plays and so many defenses. His number of mental reps goes beyond anyone we could hope to hire.

I personally think that being a HS HC is a better preparation for being a college OC than being a college QBC is. Being a HS HC requires leadership and organization. He apparently has learned that based on how he has turned his HS around.

I get your concern that he doesn't understand the speed of the game at this level. It's faster than HS but slower than the NFL. He may go through a brief adaptation phase. I just don't think it will take long.

My main concern with Ty is recruiting. Will he be willing to do it? That we don't know. If he's a coordinator, less recruiting will be expected of him. I think that may be the way it's gotta be.
