The B1G so far has expanded each time to a bordering/contiguous state
Plus Rutgers had wrestling (UConn does not) and the B1G does pride themselves on that.
UConn would have broken that mold of contiguous states and while I'm sure there are teams that could get them to break that mold I'm not sure UConn was that big enough fish to do so.
