buggers. My house backs up to a large wooded field where these things came from in droves. Standing at a back window of my house I could easily see 3 or 4 coming and going just by watching my back fence for a few minutes. Then my neighbor moved in who has an outdoor cat and poof! Problem 100% solved. It has been 4 years and I haven't seen a live one on my grass since this cat moved in. I HATE cats but I LOVE my neighbors cat. There are 3 other cats from the other side of the neighborhood who hang out with my neighbors cat at night so I think all 4 of them are on patrol.
Before the cats the next best solution was a combination of large sticky pads left in the vole tracks (once caught 4 in one night on one pad) and the pinch back mouse traps with peanut butter. But as other posters mentioned this wasn't super effective. Another thing I tried during the hot summer months is I set up a plastic plate by the openings of their tacks. The plate filled with water from the sprinklers and i put poison pellets in the water and they dissolved into the water. It was a constant source of water right by their pathway so they would use it to drink from. I could never get them to eat the poison but lots of them drank the poison. That worked well for a while.
