Please show me examples of where Emery has locked down an opposing guard who is an effective scorer.
He lunges wildly on the perimeter instead if closing out. He relies too much on hacking at the ball vs. moving his feet to stay in front of who he's guarding. He can be backed down by physical guards. He loses his man too frequently while playing off the ball. The hacking and lunging results in steals at times but also spawns unnecessary fouls and detracts from his overall effectiveness.
In other words, he plays a similar style of D as many of you do in church ball. Therefore, I'm not surprised that it finds favor on this board.
Chatman is our best on-ball defender among the guards.
Our D has struggled mightily vs. penetrating guards, and we give up far too many open jumpers. We're collectively awful, so it's easy not to be impressed by the individual parts.
I hope that clears it up. All that said, Emery has great instincts and is an RM freshman. He's fiesty and competitive. I expect he'll improve. I'm not ready to anoint him as a defensive stud now.
