I initially started buying US Savings bonds for my kids for their college. It didn't take long to figure out that there are a lot better options out there.

I started 529 accounts for each kid and put in a set amount every month.

I tell my kids that I will pay for books and tuition but I expect them to pay for room and board. I think its good for them to have some skin in the game.
