Like I said, I'm not an economist, but my limited knowledge of the subject says that "market demand" exists when people would buy a product if it were offered. If something isn't currently for sale in the marketplace, and if people would buy it if it was for sale, then you'd say that there's a market demand for that product.

I think caffeine on campus qualifies under that understanding. If it was for sale, lots of people would buy it.
