Honest question to those who are deeply familiar with the Polynesian culture
I get how for 1st generation Polys born in the US to immigrant parents that the attraction of playing for coaches of your same ethnic heritage would be important. But how far does that influence play? Does it matter as much to 2nd or 3rd generation kids?

For instancey, Vai immigrated to US with his family (was he born in US? thought not, but not sure...) and it is obvious from his reporting that he would highly value his kids playing for a Polynesian HC and staff. But what about his grandkids? Would they care as much? Would their parents, Vai's kids, care that much, or would this generation be "Americanized" enough that the draw of playing for a Polynesian HC wouldn't be as strong?

My only experience is with Asian cultures (Korea, China, and Japan to a lesser extent) and for most, by the 2nd generation most of all the old cultural ways have no more hold on the kids. They are as American as can be. Even 1st generation kids like Vai can get pretty distant from old cultural norms and ways of doing things and would almost rather NOT play for a coach of their ethnic heritage.

As the Polynesian community continues to grow, just wonder how much of an impact this staff could still have on the younger generations, or if the younger generations will look at it like any other recruit and not care so much about a coach's ethnicity.
