it was because Bryce Mahuika who had lost a his father to cancer, and so they did it for a few years before games, but toward their own fans, and not really toward the opponent. I was at the U of A game in Tuscon (2006) and they did it in front of the BYU fan section and I thought it was pretty cool.
But the reason that BYU was doing it then was as much for a fellow teammate who had lost someone, and and to fire up their fans and themselves for the game, not like how it is done by the All Blacks and other Rugby teams (designed to intimidate their oppoenents in the manner similar to the way the Haka was done before battles among Maori tribes) I did read that the BYU rugby team does a Haka that was made especially for them.
This is a long post for me to basically say, I like the Haka but there really is no place for it in American football.
