Take him as is. It will be a great lesson for everybody.
The kids whose mom packs 2 years of stuff for one week will see that they don't need all of that crap. This will help for when they pack for a mission.
The kid himself will see that being a minimalist has its up side but also its down side. A little suffering might go a long way.
