For a summit climb on Mt Adams (over 12,000' with 7,000+ prominence) we had a kid show up with all of his gear in two plastic Wal-Mart grocery bags that he planned to carry in each hand up the mountain.
Our last trip to Mt Rainier we had a kid show up with a pair of slides, a pair of low-top basketball shoes and 7 pairs of cotton socks. Who do you think was the only kid who decided to wade across the stream 1/4 of a mile into a 13.5 mile hike instead of crossing the bridge? We were there for 48 hours and he put on the 7th and final pair of dry socks 28 hours into the trip.
