A few things....
1. Taysom's injury history. We might need him halfway through game 1. Would you want to take the risk of using Tanner's red shirt and losing out on TWO fantastic QBs this season?
2. Tanner has NFL potential and he's already relatively old. He doesn't want to waste another year on a red shirt. He could be gone to the NFL after next season. If that's the case, no need to redshirt him.
3. As mentioned already, he will get play time in November.
4. Detmer has said he will be used from time to time even with a healthy Hill. Not sure exactly what that means.

He will likely play a bunch in November when the games are out of reach. He may want to jump to NFL after next year
