They just have the least "warts" or fewest negatives

I agree that they aren't a great add, but they are "solid" in comparison to many other candidates, and don't have the social/religious/geography/recruiting turf issues that other candidates have. Plus, they were members of a BCS conference, and some there's some "cover" there for the Big12.
