I'll give a dramatic answer.
If your in a riot, and many people are unsafe, why do you only feel the need to principally protect your family?

Because you feel you belong to that group probably.

In an ideal world Kapernik would try to help everyone. He identities as black and will try to principally help those he feels tied to. The black community. He may not even see it as an issue affecting white people. In his mind, it could only be affecting black people. It's tough.

But your right, I'd listen to the guy more if he spoke of poverty against all people rather than racism against blacks. It's an issue for all of society but the problem is disproportionately with minorities. That's why he speaks about blacks I guess.
