From someone who has been there that is absolutely good enough to apply to the top three.
If you're a BYU guy, you're not competing against all the other white guys. You're competing against all the other BYU guys (and there's plenty of them applying). How do you differ from them? It can't be that you attended BYU. Or did a mission. Or speak a second language. Or did some community service for church. To this point you can only differentiate yourself in a couple ways. Letter of recommenders, essays, and overall approach/brand of your application.

And remember, someone has to be below average.
