This is correct.
Steve didn't throw much in high school and didn't learn the proper mechanics. Once he got to BYU, studied Jimmie Mac's throwing motion, and applied himself, he found out that he does indeed possess the innate ability to throw accurately.
For Steve it was just a matter of figuring out he was doing it wrong.
