The hero ball play has a lot to do with getting comfortable in the system...
Any player that is playing for the first time in a system will sometimes try to force a shot to get into rhythm on offense, which can backfire sometimes. Also, an aggressive player like Bryant will cut into the defense to draw double teams/help defense, but early on he will more often shoot than pass when the help defense arrives because he knows where the rim is but likely isn't yet comfortable with where his teammates will be cutting. Emery was the same way last year...lots of shots over 3 players at the end of drives when he had wide open teammates cutting to the rim, but that happens way less often this season. Over time after some coaching and film sessions such a player can see where the ball should be going and dish to teammates for open shots. This is happening now with Bryant. As teams see on film that he's finding the open man on drives then they'll tend to stay home more often and that will open up his shot more on his drives. It's a progression and I'd say he's right on cue.
