My only guess...
There is a gas control valve inside the furnace, leading to where the flame would be. Disconnect the rubber hose that goes to it. Blow in it hard. Reconnect. See if that helps.

There might be a switch that won't let it turn on with the cover open. Find it and keep it depressed.
