Basing your opinion of Portland on the area surrounding Voodoo doughnuts is a bit like basing your opinion of Seattle on the area around 3rd and James. I've spent considerable time in many major metropolitan areas around the world, and have lived in Portland for over 15 years. There are certainly some less desirable areas, but overall, Portland is easily one of the cleanest major cities I've experienced. But since I'm obviously not impartial, I'll just refer you to a Reader's Digest article entitled "50 Cleanest (Dirtiest) Cities in America." Guess which city was named the cleanest?

BTW, Seattle (which is one of my favorite cities, tainted only by the tendency of some of its citizens to look down their noses at Portland) ranks 27th out of 50.
