The thing that is most striking to me is very few e-commerce pure players are profitable. E-commerce is not the most cost-effective way to get goods to consumers. Around 75% of the cost of e-commerce shipping is transporting the goods the last mile to the consumer. Brick and mortar retailers can save this 75% of shipping costs because consumers travel to the product and pick it up themselves.
