The middle is gone or going. Only the extremes will survive. Costco has been
playing the middle trying to provide quality, price and service. They will eventually have to chose two of the three. If they chose price and quality, price will force them into the Sam's Club/Walmart quality market. If they chose service and quality, which I doubt, they'll end up competing with Nordstrom-I don't see that happening. Too much Chinese crap finding its way into Costco. Grocery might keep Walmart alive...people still like to see their food before they prepare it...but even that is changing...maybe the food industry ends up with specialty grocers and prepared food. I can't estimate how lazy Americans will get. Price and convenience seem to drive most of the markets. Quality has been successfully replaced with marketing's illusion of quality. I guess I estimate that most American's are happy to be deceived with the implication of quality if it brings instant short term gratification. Maybe we're not as stupid as I think...maybe it ADD.
