By the 4th quarter, the physically inferior team is toast and long gains come easy for the other side. Of course there are rare exceptions with innovative offenses such as Boise State in years past. Same thing for BYU under Edwards - for over a decade they were waaaay ahead of their time. Utah was also highly innovative in 2004 - I wish they had a chance to play a great team and work a miracle.
