We took had a car for half (coming in from the east to the interlaken area) and train for the other half (golden railroad to geneva). We also had a regional tram/boat/train/bus pass in between while around interlaken ($$, but totally awesome). The drive in was beautiful and it was nice to be able to pull over a few times. Golden railroad was fantastic, but after that not having a car was burdensome and even just short jots around on the train were way more expensive than germany. We felt kind of stuck in Lausanne without a car.
