BYU H2O POLO Walk-on
RE: Imagine if the football coaches recruited like that. Nate Carter over JWill.
Extremely frustrated with the recruiting attitude regarding the coaches from what I just read about Popoola (who is better than the guards) we currently have. Does Urban Meyer, JIm Harbaugh, Roy Williams give up on a kid because he won't sign when "you want him to?" Heck NO. BYU should be able to recruit LDS/NON LDS KID'S all day long. Unless, they won't commit when you want them to and you give up. BYU has several advantages: 1) Exposure (all your games are on tv whether FOX, ESPN or BYUtv), 2) excellent facilities, 3) great, passionate fan base, etc., The issues I see with the current coaching staff with this current crop of players, specifically point guards, is they're so loyal to the LP boys and didn't allow for competition to determine who plays. Furthermore, there are no repercussions when they engage in "hero ball" (i.e. Catching some splintered on the bench, which is an excellent teacher, motivator to get a player playing how a coach wants them to). Another issue, player development. Only one player has developed and become better: Mika. Unfortunately, this coaching staff doesn't do a good job of developing on both ends of the floor. I love Jimmer, but even at the Y, he didn't play defense. What did this do to help him reach his long term goal of having a successful career in the NBA? It created a false perception he was an NBA player, but when he got to the league he was exposed as a severe defensive liability, just like he was at BYU. Thus, he's no longer in the league. If he would've been forced to play defense at BYU (rather than play the 2/3 zone to cover him up), he would've gone a lot further in the NBA. Kyle Collinsworth in 4 years couldn't develop an outside shot. He's another guy with immense talent and had he developed this skill, I believe he would've been in the league. Lack of player development has hindered the program from attracting good players. Another issue, not having players in the NBA kills BYU. Back in the day you had: Ainge, Kite, Roberts, Bradley (just to name a few). Who have we had in the last 17 years? Araujo (?) and Jimmer (not a good perception of the program). This hinders BYU immensely. I trace this all back to the coaching staff. Players want to,feel like their in a program that can get them to the league. We all want BYU to win conference championships, go deep in the tourney and watch future NBA players from BYU. The coaching staff needs to step up their game in all facets. Here's to raising a root beer to all of you, with the hope that occurs. Cheers!
