When MJ was in HS, the NBA was a non entity. The finals were on tape delay.
The interest in the NBA and basketball in general is a 1000 times more than it was. It's very easy to see how that would lead to increases in participation, competition, and talent.
And that does not even begin to take in the international competition for roster spots.
