It's a snowball effect. The West Coast teams are more used to LDS recruits and
are willing to stick their necks out there for a chance at a top notch recruit. Once the list of key PAC12 programs offer, it tells the SEC, BIG Ten et al that there is a chance to get a top notch recruit in spite of them being LDS. That is "We can get him out of his mission plans". Kid throwing crazy numbers in Tennessee is surrounded by a culture that has little experience with the LDS and to many they are one step away from Devil worship. Vandy was on the table because the President of the School is LDS. The exposure to top SEC programs don't know how to handle the Mormon mission issue. So they throw five offers for two slots at QB, one kid is hesitant due to the mission, they are not going to care if the kid and his family are going out early and strong with mission first message. It does matter and you might not believe it makes a difference, but it really does.
