This thread only reminds me of how bad our Oline was for several years
The underlying theme of the whole Heap/Nelson saga was how bad the line was back in those days. Both QBs had their issues but the situation was greatly magnified because of the horrendous offensive line. Nelson was pressed into action because he was extremely mobile and could take a hit despite having a noodle arm.

Heaps had all the tools but had his bell run a few too many times and never recovered to a point where he could play the position nicely again. Making the situation even worse was a terrible run game. When your own line can't push around Weber State, you know you have had some recruiting and development issues.

Given a decent line, I think the story would of been very different for these QBs. Heaps would have his confidence. Nelson wouldn't of been playing with a broken back.

The problem continued into the Hill/Mangum years. Thank goodness we had one of the best running QBs ever back there at times. Mangum was forced to roll out nearly every play because of quick pressure.

Maybe posted earlier, but I thought this was an interesting interview with Heaps (Pistol Shrimp, Jul 25, 2017 at 1:41pm)
