I understand that a starter on BYU's football team is a high profile position,
and therefore subject to the natural tendency to rumors and speculation, but it just doesn't seem fair that an athlete has to have his or her dirty laundry aired publicly while the accounting or engineering student, who may be in the exact same situation, gets to fly under the radar with no public discussion or embarrassment. Why doesn't the athlete get to take care of his or her challenges privately and confidentially with their Bishop? Harvey Unga and Brandon Davies were subject to public embarrassment over something that happens to many others without any such public rumormongering. Kudos to both (and others) for having endured that process with dignity and maturity. I realize you can't hide or ignore the fact that a projected starting linebacker is suddenly not participating in practice or games but I feel badly for fine young men and women who face the same challenges as everyone else yet have to deal with them in such a public way. I don't know what the answer is, but there has to be a better way.
