There are so many talented atheletes now compared to what it was 40 years ago when Lavell coached that many of the teams have 2nd and 3rd string top notch players at every position.

The teams like WISCONSIN are beginning to look more like NFL teams than college teams with their size, speed and athleticism.

Think about it, how many TOP running backs does BYU pick up.  BYU is lucky to get one top RB every 5 years while WISCONSIN had 3 good running backs.

Many of these teams like WISCONSIN have lineman that all look like MORTEKAI LANGI weighing in at 350 pounds and they are not new to the game.  They are being trained by coaches that have EXTENSIVE P5 experience in all aspects of the game.

There are 128 Division 1 college teams and lets assume that there is an average of 1 LDS player on every team outside of BYU that has about 90% LDS participation and lets say that a college team uses an average of 55 players on a team in DIV 1-A.

If we multiply 128 * 55 = 7040 players (average count that play). Number of LDS players at 1 per team outside of BYU is 128 LDS players. Add 90% of 55 of BYU LDS players is 50 that play.  Therefore of the active player participation, LDS students make up about 128 + 50 = 178 or (178/7040 * 100) = 2.5 percent. Some teams may not have any LDS students while others may have more than 1.

The bottom line is that to get better players in every position to come to BYU we would need to attract a much higher percentage of top NON-LDS student athletes that would have to meet BYU's academic standards and live by the honor code.  Is this possible when you consider how high the percentage of NON-LDS athletes would be compared to the LDS athlete percentage participation.
