It was 1st and 10 on the 35-ish when I first said they should kick.

Instead, they wasted their time trying to get a TD, failed, and had no shot at winning. At least kicking a very makeable (by NFL standards) FG with time left (and no TOs) keeps the game alive and gives your team a chance to be in control - the key to the situation.
