substance.  He was just quick on his feet in responding to a question that he recognized would generate some followup and unwarranted conclusions by those who heard it if he answered with someone who not everyone could agree with.  By picking Lavell, he gave the only answer he could that wouldn't generate more speculation about why he answered it that way.  But apparently it didn't completely work as evidenced by your searching for and reaching conclusions that are likely without substance.
