Don't have a QB yet that can run it. It's a roster in flux, and Tanner is struggling more than expected. Lack of a
consistent running game is also hurting a lot. Ula has been very good when given carries, but he's hampered by (understandable due to mission) lack of conditioning and by having a body not generally ready for D1 football. If coaches had the luxury, they wouldn't play Ula at all this year and would give him a redshirt year to get his body ready. Same with a number of true freshmen forced into service. We're making do, and having a QB struggling as much as Tanner is struggling is killing us. Hoge looked very strong against USU before he got hurt. If Hoge were healthy we'd have at least one additional win, probably two, and would win a bunch down the stretch. Beau wasn't running much pro-style, but he was certainly showing a grasp of what he was being asked to run, and it was working. Right now, we're going to continue to struggle, in all likelihood, because we're having to play a hobbled Tanner (who was struggling to begin with and now has an injury to deal with) and rely on a true freshman recently-returned missionary as backup. As time rolls by, we'll have more QBs capable of at least decent play, and hopefully at least one of Wilstead and Critchlow will develop into the QB we need. Once the system is up and running with reasonable effectiveness, it will be much easier to keep it going as newer players come in and learn from guys who know what's going on. Right now, everybody's learning is being hampered by the QB situation.
