Fair enough. BYU was also 2-8 in 1961 when Lavell was hired with 0 D1 experience. BYU was not the same program
that it is now. BYU went 4-6, 2-8, 3-6-1 while Lavell had "OJTs" as a Defensive coordinator, followed by a good spell of 6-4, 8-2, 6-4, before more losing seasons.
If this is the BYU we want to become, then we can continue to hire coaches (especially coordinator coaches) with zero D1 experience.
I think experience does matter.
