Nope you don't get a dog "for the kids". You get a dog, it's your dog.
Most kids won't take care of a dog well enough until a certain age, usually older teenagers. Plus most dogs would rather live indoors with humans. If not, an outdoor dog needs a ton of human attention to stay happy, unless maybe they got a large farm to run around on to stay entertained.
Get them a betta or something easier that if it dies you just go get another.
