This could have potentially happened in the BCS Era with BYU, Utah, and TCU in
MWC, and Boise joining. Conferences were up for review a few years after Everyone bolted, but it seemed Very possible that the MWC could replace the big East in the BCS, instead everyone left the MWC, the BCS was dissolved and both conferences were left out of the P5. Seems unlikely that this could ever be a possibility again with the power the P5 has gained with the CFP
